Sansa Stark 2.09 “Blackwater”
Because this girl no longer believes in stories and songs. This girl, despite what they tell her, isn’t a little bird just chirping what she’s told because she knows nothing else. This girl is scarred. This girl has no hope. This girl watched her father die, was stripped and beaten and nearly raped, had what should have been a moment of pride turn into a moment of terror because it means that Joffrey can legally force her, and then the only mother figure in the city promised her that she’ll be executed before the enemy can sack the place. This girl knows that Joffrey will be back to hurt her again because that’s what happens. The monsters win because they don’t play fairly and because life is a cruel jape. So when Sandor approaches her in her room she can look past her fear of him because she knows what fear is. Sandor won’t hurt her. Nor will Tyrion, and so she promises to pray for him. But they won’t help her either and so she stays. She prays and sings and leads because she’s a Stark and a Tully and honor and duty are in her blood, but she doesn’t count on anyone to help her. No one but Shae, and so she tries to help Shae in return but Shae doesn’t need it. Sansa Stark, this mere girl, has no hope but she’s going to survive anyways. And the North remembers.
